I have something really exciting to tell you about. I’ve recently read a copy of Veronica Canning’s new book Shoesims: Working woman’s guide to take control and be the sassy, successful woman you know you can be

It’s a great book based on her Shoeism cards but with more detail and inspiration for every day. If you want to keep yourself motivated and reach your full potential, and have fun along the way, then I’d recommend you purchase a copy. It is the kind of book that you can dip in and out of as you feel the need. So, if you have a busy schedule, as everyone does these days, you needn’t worry about taking up where you left off. You can just start again at any page that takes your fancy.

I bought it as a gift to myself and I couldn’t put it down. I love it and I’ll keep it on my shelf with my other favourites to dip into again and again. It really is an original work by a trailblazing female author and motivational speaker.

Guest post by Liam S. Kelly

There is a great black and white photograph on page 39 in the 1 February 2010 print edition of Time magazine, in an article about how New York, London and Hong Kong (or Nylonkong as they are referred to in the article) are faring in the Great Recession. It is of a well-dressed young woman in stilettos standing on the steps of a building in Wall Street, with seated tourists and a TV reporter doing a piece to camera in the background. She is holding a large, hand-lettered poster stating: ‘Laid-off today 9.30am. HIRE ME. CME. MBA. Non-profit mgt.’ The article can be read here but the online edition contains a different picture. Someone with that pizazz and sheer initiative deserves a job right away. I hope she has found one. She is an inspiration to us all.

In my professional blog, The Wonderful World of Marketing, I published a piece about a new book for women in business. As it is also a good read for selling yourself in interviews or in any other sphere where you need to build rapport, influence and persuade people, I am also publishing it here. I try not to replicate content but, on this occasion, I am making an exception.

Julie Roman, AKA SavvySaleswoman, has just published her new book entitled, Selling With Heart in Just 5 Days. It is a book about selling the feminine way. I have had the privilege of reading an advanced review copy and can testify to its practicality and usefulness. It will help you to win new business and develop great relationships with your customers. What more could you want?

By way of encouragement to others, I am posting this article which relates to my professional blog.

I have just found out that I have been listed in We Magazine’s list of 100 More Women Bloggers to Watch for 2009 for my marketing blog The Wonderful World of Marketing. I am naturally thrilled by this news as I have spent a lot of time and effort developing engaging, stimulating and most of all useful content for my readers.

It takes time to develop a blog and you need to put a lot of effort into it, especially at the beginning, when you often feel as though you are talking to yourself. However, I have attracted new clients as a direct result of it and I can track my traffic so I know how many people ready my blog each day, week or month.

So I would just like to say a big thank you to all of you who read it, leave comments and continue to keep coming back to find out what’s new.

I hope that this will encourage you to keep living your dreams, whatever they are, and do something you love, as then you will truly be great at it, rather than struggling in something you are only half-hearted about.

I will leave you with a quote from Oprah Winfrey, “Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.”

I’d thoroughly recommend your reading it. It has a very lively and engaging style and is a dream to read. It would even be an engaging read for male executives who are keen to keep female talent in their organisation or attract them into their industry.

At the end of the book she makes the point that when you encounter the last hurdle to the executive suite, the glass ceiling or, often, the cement ceiling, why not move to another room, and she asks, “Better yet, why not build your own building?”

What do you think? Is that a cop out or a realistic option for women in corporate life? If all the talented women in corporations leave won’t that make the companies poorer? Won’t their colleagues miss out on what they have to offer and contribute?

On the other hand, setting up your own company means that you are taking responsibility for your own career and work-life balance. It means you have initiative and have the courage and fearlessness needed to succeed.

I have to admit that this is something that I have been thinking about for some time. Having worked in London for most of my career to date I never noticed the glass ceiling when I was in my twenties, but in my early thirties I noticed that there were fewer and fewer women between the ages of thirty and say forty-five to fifty in the workplace. That meant fewer and fewer role models and mentors for younger women. I think it is a shame as companies and men and women maintain their equilibriums better when they have a more equally distributed demographic.

As a business coach I met recently said to me, nobody wants to be, ‘just a career woman’ or ‘just a mother’, or ‘just a wife/partner’. As I’ve said before, we are many selves. We need to honour that and give ourselves our full permission to express them. I might add that this also applies to men, if any are reading this.

Don’t be shy, drop me a line and air your views.

The book is published by Career Press and can be purchased on Amazon if you are interested.

Experience has shown that creative visualization works. It is quite possible to prove that circumstances and events follow thoughts. Take any situation or happening in your life, and go back to find what kind of thoughts preceded the event. You will find out that a particular event, followed particular thoughts.

Here are the reasons why visualization produces results:

# We are an inseparable part of the creative Universal Mind. Our thoughts are projected into this omnipotent power, and cause its tremendous power act on our behalf. The Universal mind and us are partners in creating our life.

# Everything in the Universe is interconnected. Each thought, action and event in the universe are connected and influence each other. Each thought and action cause reactions and repercussions.

# Everything in the Universe is energy. We see differences because each object has a different wavelength and density. We live in an ocean of energy. Each wave in this ocean influences the other waves. Thoughts, as part of this body of energy, work with the creative Universal energy and interact with it.

# Thoughts are like a magnet, they attract similar thoughts and circumstances. Thinking one thought invites into the mind more similar thoughts and ideas. These thoughts tend to attract circumstances that are in accordance with them.

# A clear mental image radiates from the mind of the one thinking it, and is transmitted to other minds. Whoever is receptive to this kind of thought may perceive it and act on it, thus being the agent to fulfill the desire.

# By repeating the same thoughts day after day, the subconscious mind is driven to act on them. In this way habits and behavior are formed. The thoughts that sink into the subconscious mind drive people into corresponding action.

# Each thought we think arouses an associated emotion. If the emotion is strong enough, it incites to action. Strong thoughts energized by emotions cause more energetic and definite action than weak thoughts. Such an action brings results in accordance with the thought that prompted it.

# Similar thoughts bring people together. When one person has a need, and the other can supply it, their thinking can bring them together in a surprising manner. This is what we call a coincidence.

Some time ago I have heard the following story, which can illustrate such a coincidence:

A woman has been searching for of a new job as a graphic designer. One morning, while going towards her car, she found out that she had a flat tire. Reluctantly, she took the spare tire out, and prepared herself for the unpleasant task of changing it.

As she was trying to loosen the screws of the tire, a car stopped by, and the driver asked her if she needed any assistance. She accepted his help, and while changing the wheel they started to talk.

It turned out that he owned a graphics designing company, and needed desperately a qualified and experienced graphic designer. To her surprise and joy, he requested her to come to his office later during the day, with her certificates and recommendations for an interview.

She did not have to wait for the interview, as she was always carrying her certificates and recommendations with her. When he saw them, he was deeply impressed and hired her on the spot.

This meeting brought together two people who needed each other in some way. It was no coincidence, as one was thinking about hiring someone, and the other about finding a new job. Their thoughts brought them into meeting each other.
